Nailing It: Tips to Achieve a Great Superbowl Nail Style

Purple. That is my favorite nail color for the winter season, a deep rich purple. However, with the Superbowl coming up this Sunday, I should probably get the deep blue out because I'm a Patriots fan and supporting them is pretty crucial. Okay...okay it may be a little extreme to represent your team through nail color, but is it any less patriotic than painting my entire body and wiggling all my jiggly parts at the stadium. I think not...well maybe a little.

To assist me in getting the perfect Superbowl nails, I am turning to Julep and their brand of nail polish for help. My favorite brand is usually OPI, but recently I saw a few hues of Julep's that would be perfect to honor my Massachusetts based team.  For my Game Day Nails, I will probably sport one nail with Julep's Claudette color and the rest in their Ilsa hue to represent the deep blue and red colors of the Patriots.

Like any good self-manicure though, I usually have my own steps to not completely make a mockery out of my hands. (Yes, painting my right with my left is hard) I don't know about everyone else, but I almost always paint outside of my nail bed and at times have to repaint a nail because I accidentally peeled off a layer when pulling my leggings up. Needless to say, I save money doing them on my own and after a few tries, they come out pretty good. Therefore, if you are willing to trust me, this is what I have learned to get somewhat professional looking nails.

Have a Paper Towel Roll Nearby
Paper towel is like the Prince Charming who rescues Rapunzel from the tower. Granted, I don't get a kiss, but it is there fore me when I spill acetone, to clean polish off of my skin, and protect surfaces from all the ingredients I use for my mani. He's convenient and comes to the rescue when it counts most. If it weren't for him, my hands would look like a Jackson Pollock painting.

Two Layers of Color One of Clear
If you are like me, you have suffered from NPB (Nail Polish Bubbles). It is not a fun sight and quite honestly supper annoying when you paint your nails and BAM you have little bubbles forming all over the fresh paint. To avoid this, I began giving each layer of polish time to fully dry before placing the next one on. I paint the first layer of color and wait until dry and then mask on the next one. Once those are completely sealed, I then paint over all the nails with a coat of clear nail polish. It is important that for the clear polish your nails are completely dry. Whenever I used to get bubbles it would happen when I placed the clear on too fast. Also, quick suggestion, but make sure your clear is a new and fresh bottle. When clear nail polish gets old the texture changes into a jelly-like substance causing it  to be harder to spread on and work with.

Got a Smudge? Use Some Acetone
I have smudged my polish many times. In this case, you don't have to repaint the nail. Just get a dab of acetone, place it on your finger and gently smooth it out by running your finger over it. Remember, you only need a small dab of acetone. You don't want too much or to rub too hard because than you will peel the color off completely.

File Your Nails the Night Before 
I used to file my nails before painting them and this was a big mistake. I would end up with little hang nails that did not want to smooth out when it came down to the manicure. Now, I file them the night before to ensure they are ready for when I need them to be. I don't know. Maybe my nails are the only ones that do this, but if not, try this suggestion and I promise your nails will listen to you.

Netflix or a Movie is Your Best Friend
I get really bored when I have to wait for my nails to dry. Because of this, I begin moving around which eventually leads me to messing them up and chipping the polish. If you have Netflix or at least a T.V., my suggestion is put on a movie or binge watch a show while they dry. The time will go by faster and the odds of you chipping them will be much less than before. I usually witness Barney Stinson hitting on about twenty women by watching How I Met Your Mother. Did I mention that's in only one episode! I told you letting your nails dry can be entertaining.

What the Fall: Fashion and Beauty Essentials for this Autumn

I will start off by saying that I love Spring the most as a season. Then, I would chose Summer and then, I would decide on Fall. I adore sweater weather, but for me, Fall can be at times like the Sunday of seasons. It is there to warn you of winters's impending cold and darkness similar to a Sunday reminding you of the work week's time clock restarting. However, there are loads of reasons to love Fall. Aside from the start of the holiday season, marathons of Friends' Thanksgiving episodes, and touring farms, it is an awesome time of year for fashion. It's the time where minimal layers are being used to give everyone the warmth, but still convenient stylish aurora that Winter majorly lacks in. During the winter I always feel like the younger brother in A Christmas Story, bundled up so much so, that I'm afraid of falling and not being able to get back up. Thankfully, Fall is not like this. Therefore, when fellow blogger, Simone Danielle of Fashion Runs the World, invited me join in on a fall essentials collaboration, I just had to participate.

With that said, here is a list of my Fall Essentials:

1. Sweaters 
I cannot live without sweaters. They are secretly my guilty pleasure and I will admit to having way too many of them. For Fall. they work as my jacket--keeping me warm and stylish at the same time. The best part about them is that they can be dressed up or dressed down. I've worn them with everything from yoga pants to pencil skirts.
2. Leggings
EVERYONE SHOULD OWN LEGGINGS! Okay, I know some would rather sport jeans, but personally, I absolutely love leggings. I'm pretty sure I keep Aerie in business from all the ones I buy at their stores. Like sweaters, they are extremely diverse and can be worn in a variety of ways. They even have them in all the colors of the rainbow. I only buy black though because it matches everything, but these babies are comfortable, last for a while, and can be found for a reasonable price in many places. Wear them to the gym, wear them to a nature walk, wear them to cozy movie date, or even wear them to a Thanksgiving dinner because no matter what, they will be faithful and look fabulous. Also, if you buy yoga ones, which are the types I own, your bum will thank you for making it look fit and flirty!
3. Scarves
This has to be the easiest go-to accessory for the Fall season. If you need a pop of color or simply need to get that neck of yours a little toasty, a scarf is your best friend for both. They come in an array of colors and prints and also make a great gift for any occasion!
4. Buns
Being in college, if there is one thing I can relate to, is that Monday mornings and pretty much any morning where you wake up half asleep is a day to don a bun. This signature hairstyle is like that extra cash you keep hidden for a rainy day. It's there when you really need it and surprisingly buns are a necessity quite a lot. It takes a few minutes to make and can easily be made to look effortless when paired with some dangly earrings and wait for it....a scarf.
5. Burt's Bees Cleansing Cloths
I cannot live without these cleansing cloths. Seriously, I would probably melt like the Wicked Witch of the West. Okay, I exaggerate. In all honesty though, I started using these this past summer while working at an away camp and have never looked back. It was quite the tedious task to find wipes that didn't make my eyes itch or dry my skin. These don't do either and for me that is a major win! I use them in the morning to refresh my face and yes to get rid of those dreadful eye boogies. Yes, I said eye boogies. Don't pretend like you haven't had them.
6. Equestrian Boots
Buying a well-made pair of leather boots is one of the best fashion investments one can make. I have had my equestrian boots for almost three years now and they still look great. They can be styled with any ensemble. I'm not really into combat boots or even those that look like Robin Hood went swashbuckling in them. Equestrian boots have a simple design, but also have an effortless chicness to them that will show itself in any outfit you wear.
7. Boot Socks
These are not only cute and match well with your boots and leggings, but they add extra warmth to your legs and feet on a cooler day. It's a win win...enough said.
8. Anything Mustard Yellow 
The description is pretty explanatory, but if you needed to pick a color to rely on during the Fall, try some mustard yellow. Anything in this color is a great choice to spice up an outfit made of darker tones such as burgundy or even purple. It looks amazing against darker hues and creates a contrast that gives you instant street style maven status. Just remember: if it goes well with a hot dog, it goes well with any outfit.

Bloggers Benefit: Fashion Blogger Simone Danielle on Spreading Breast Cancer Awareness

Beauty is her passion, style is her talent, and blogging is her professional habit. Yes, these are all things you could say about beauty and style blogger of Fashion Runs the World, Simone Danielle, but there is more to this stiletto clad maven than meet the eye. Her real love is put into trying to spread awareness for breast cancer. With a personal connection to the cause, Danielle spends time not only posting about make-up tips or what trends are currently making history, but supporting breast cancer awareness though foundations such as Susan G. Komen and movements like The Making Strides Walk. 

Danielle is the second Ambassador for Bloggers Benefit and one to be certainly proud of, due to her inspiring work ethic and strength against the overwhelming power of cancer on today's society. I met her a year ago when I hosted a fashion week lunch and to this day she has become a close blogging acquaintance as well as good friend. Between our conversations about running on no sleep at fashion week, to the politics of style as sex, Danielle and I always know how to have a fun time no matter what the environment. Because, like Danielle's natural knack for beauty and style, her loyalty and caring persona shine bright like the earrings camping out on her ears. It's no surprise that one day her contributions to the world not only fashion wise, but breast cancer awareness wise, will run the world. (pun totally intended) 

We have known each other for quite sometime now and I'd like to think we are blogging buddies. (laughs) Having you participate in Bloggers Benefit is special because you and I have watched each other's sites grow and and become better over time. Am I being sentimental here or do you feel the same? (laughs) 

I do feel the same way! You were one of the first people I actually met through blogging and I'm happy we did because we are good friends. I wish we would see each other more often. But yes our sites have grown since we met each other and it's only going to get better.

Last time I saw you was during September's New York fashion week and we were parting ways on Columbus Circle. Aside from attending a baby shower that day, what else has been going on with you and your fashion based world?

I've been working as well and looking into to getting my Masters degree in Marketing or Communications. I've been thinking about continuing my education for awhile and I can use either of these degrees in the fashion industry, so I'm excited. Plus I've been working on my site and looking for work within the fashion industry. I'm also going to the gym to lose some weight but I looovvveee food so much! It's been a bit of a struggle, but I do want to eat healthier.

On your blog you feature everything from make-up to street style. What about it is your favorite? 

I just love sharing two things that I'm passionate about with my readers. I like staying on top of trends, seeing what's new in fashion and I like those aspects and interoperate that in my outfits. With makeup, it's just so much fun. I wasn't always into it but watching YouTube changed that for me. I enjoy putting on makeup and sharing some of the tips I've learned or the newest lipstick I bought with my readers. It's fun. And my favorite part about it is that it is all subjective. What I like or think is trendy maybe different to the next person.

What made you fall for fashion and beauty?

I've always been into fashion since I was little. I would watch all the red carpet shows before the Oscars, Grammys, etc. to see what everyone is wearing, including the reporter. While I was watching it, I would critique each look especially the ones that were not good. Also, I watched America's Next Top Model a lot and thinking how I wanted to be apart of that world. For makeup I got into it when I was working at a CVS Pharmacy when I was 16. I was into little things like eyeshadow, but I really got into it when I was 23 and starting watching YouTube. I like that makeup enhances a person's beauty and it's fun to create different looks.

Right now, you only write for your blog. Would you ever consider starting a vlog or is being on a video a terrifying feat for you? 

I do want to start a YouTube channel. I am looking into purchasing a new camera that is good for taking video. I don't think I would do makeup tutorials but my channel would be about style, fashion and beauty. I won't lie starting a YT channel is a bit daunting for me because it's over saturated. Everybody is a fashion blogger or a YT vlogger so its hard to stand out amongst the crowd, but I'm willing to take on that challenge.  

Are the goals you had then for your site the same as they are today or have they changed over time?

They are the still the same for the most part. I decided to write my blog as a way to break into the fashion industry. That is the main goal for my blog, but over time I realized that I can make money from it so I'm looking into that. Because of my blog I am able to attend NYFW, but I want to see if I can go to London and Paris fashion week as well. That's my next plan. We should plan something. 

Speaking of goals, I started Bloggers Benefit to spread awareness for charities and campaigns through the influence of bloggers. Why did you decide to be apart of this movement?

I think this is a really good movement and it helps people become aware of the different organizations that are out there. Plus, as bloggers we get to share a piece of our personal life with our readers, which is a great thing as well because we could be helping someone who could be affected by any one of these diseases.

There is an endless amount of charity organizations out there, but you chose to represent The Susan G Komen association for breast cancer awareness. Was there a personal reason behind your decision? 

Yes there was. I lost my mother to Breast Cancer in 2010 and my grandmother (my mom's mother) to the disease as well when I was about eleven or twelve years old. When I lost my mom, however, it changed my whole life.

Along with the Susan G. Komen association, what do you do on your personal time to help with the cause? 

I'm going to be honest, I'm not as involved as I should be which is something I am working on. I want to participate in the walks and raise money for the cause not just during the month of October.

Has there ever been a point where you felt like you truly made a positive difference with it? Your Ah-Ha moment as Oprah would say.

No not really. But by sharing my story with my friends and telling them what I've learned through my loss; I think it has made them see certain things differently.

In the past couple of years the Susan G Komen charity has come under fire because it was discovered that the CEO, Nancy Brinker, was receiving a higher salary than the amount of donations used for actual research. How do you feel about this issue? Does it taint your belief in this particular company? How can you reassure others that the charity is still worth it?

This is the first time hearing of this and it's pretty messed up. However, I do believe in this company and think people should still donate to the cause. There are also other organizations that support Breast Cancer research such as Avon and Making Strides, where a person can donate to a team or to an individual person if they aren't comfortable with donating to Susan G. Komen.  This foundation still raises the most money for the cause though and I do hope that they do lower her salary and use the extra money to fund some more research.

What is your greatest advice for women to avoid getting breast cancer? 

Make sure to get a mammogram and look into seeing if the cancer runs in your family. If it does then its possible that you might get the cancer. Do your research. It is always better to catch the cancer early on than later so make sure to get your breasts check.

Is there a misconception about breast cancer? If so, why do think so many believe this? 

Well, I didn't know that there are different types of breast cancer. My mother had a form of breast cancer which is called Triple Negative. It is an aggressive form of breast cancer that is more likely to affect African American and Hispanic women. I didn't know that there was different forms of breast cancer. I just thought there was one type so I think that's a big misconception. Another misunderstanding is that it can be genetic. Before my mother passed away, she told me there is a test that I can take to see if I have the gene for breast cancer. Since my grandmother and my mom had it, it's probable that I might have the gene as well. If I do have it then I have to start getting mammograms early and take preventative steps to make sure that I can beat it. Also, most people think men can't get breast cancer but they definitely can. It's not just an issue that only women face. Men can get breast cancer too. You don't see a lot of men get the disease. Therefore, it's easy to not think they do, but with research you find these things out. 

If one cannot afford to donate financially, what are other ways to get involved and make a difference? 

You can volunteer during the walks or other events they have. Don't forget that sharing what you know about the disease to other people can help too!

What's the most inspiring thing you have ever been told that you would like to share with those dealing with breast cancer?

This isn't something that I have been told, but it is something that I tell myself.  No matter what, always be strong. It's hard to be strong because you want to break down and cry and it's okay to do so, but after you got it out of your system, you have to continue to fight and be strong.

Game Day Gal: What to Wear for a Game this NFL Season

Do you hear that? The beers are being cracked open, chips are flying, and cheers are taking over the ears of everyone within a ten mile radius because that's how loud and involved the audience is. This must mean only one thing and no it is not that Game of Thrones is on. It's football season and the aura of sportsmanship, tailgating, and pulling one's hair out when your favorite wide receiver misses a brilliant pass, has officially kicked off. I swear there is no pun intended there. Okay, maybe there is.

On game day, supporting your beloved team in the right attire is as important as the food you eat while witnessing those possible historical sport-themed moments. I'm thinking fried chicken, burgers, and hot wings, yes lots and lots of hot wings. Sorry, this should be about what you are wearing. I just got carried away with the thought of food...and those hot wings. (Closes eyes, breathes in, and shakes head) Okay, I'm back.

What could you wear? Well, the possibilities are endless. My personal take though is that you can't go wrong with a pair of folded jeans, Keds, and the jersey for the player you like most. However, you could also sport some black leggings, a team jersey or hoodie, and some nice fall boots. It really depends on your comfort level, how warm you need to be (i.e will you be tailgating/attending the game or watching from an inside location), and what your personal style, in general, is. If you're the type to go topless and paint yourself instead, go for it!

To help out with the actual team merchandise for your ensemble, a great place to check out would be Fanatics. They are the online leading retailer specializing in sports apparel for almost any of your favorite teams, from various sports. I mention them because I have been thoroughly impressed with the amount of merchandise they have. Prices vary and at times Jerseys can be a bit expensive (when are they not), but the people I worked with, from their company, have been beyond nice and helpful. I also like the fact that they have so much variety in what they sell.

Therefore, in collaboration with Fanatics and their official NFL attire, I have chosen to make a couple of outfit ideas picking their Julian Edelman jersey, wide receiver for the Patriots, to add to the final look of each. Sure, I know what you must be wondering. Why didn't she chose a Tom Brady jersey?  Well, contrary to popular belief, as much as we Patriot fans love our Brady, we do admire and "know" of other players as well. With that said, I like Edelman and love the Patriots so picking his jersey was as easy as staring into his dreamy eyes. Don't worry I watch for more than his eyes. They are just a delightful addition to the game whenever you get a quick glance of them. Seriously though, get to your t.v. screen when they do a close-up of him next time. You can thank me later.

Pigtails and Platforms: Celebrating "Baby One More Time's" Sweet 16 with its Memorable Fashion

"Baby One More Time" has turned 16! Do you feel that too..shivers of feeling old suddenly passing through your body? Well, don't worry we are all on the same page with this one. I was six years-old when this famous music video appeared on television. I couldn't look away and it was mostly because of how cool I thought that new girl looked with her pigtails and school uniform. I wanted to dance in the middle of a school hall like nobody was watching while simultaneously pulling off furry pom poms in my hair. Whatevs, it was the late 90s and at the time this was as daring as it got in the pop world. Maybe in another 16 years we can talk about Miley's fascination with a wrecking ball and finally feel like it wasn't a big deal, but a revolutionary moment in pop history. Actually, scratch that. I don't think that video will ever not be shocking. Yes I used a double negative. 

To celebrate "Baby's..." sweet sixteen here are some GIFs capturing the video's epic costumes that will forever rule adult Halloween parties, men's fantasies in the bedroom, and well our hearts in general. Whether you admit it or not, this song put Britney on the map and made her the pop princess she is to this day. Sure she has had her ups and downs, but at the end of the day, I still love that teenage girl who danced into my television screen sixteen years ago, held a snake like a boss while performing, and made a comeback after a few years of craziness like it was her job.

Style and the City: Recap of New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2015

I slipped and managed to do a 150 degree split in the middle of an Italian restaurant on the upper-west side. Yes, like in true Katie style, I must somehow embarrass myself at least once a day. Thankfully I caught myself on the booth nearby and no one, not even Diane, whom I was dining with, noticed my almost crash to the floor. Of course, with my uncontrollable laughter I attracted a group of looks seconds later, one particularly coming from the waitress who then noticed what had happened. She of course asked if I was okay. I simply told her I was totally fine, but my confidence not so much...actually screw it I was truly fantastic. It would take much more than a little slip to make me feel utter shame. As I carefully took myself back to the table, Diane looked at me confused as to what had just occurred. She had the same confused look I had when I first saw Vanilla Sky or Inception. Once I explained she began to giggle. [Quick Note: I still don't know what the fudge Vanilla Sky was about!]

It was night and after a long day of fashion week commitments, both of us decided style would take a break for a few hours so we could finally eat. Neither of us had ever dined there before, but in the middle of 9th ave we found a chic paradise filled with all the solace and delight of true Italian cuisine with a modern flare. Slip? What Slip? Feet sores...nope don't feel any throbbing pain. All moments that made this fashion week tiring as well as enthralling were put on the back burner for a while, because for a couple of hours, it wasn't about the fashion, but rather about friendship, relationships, and one life-changing key lime pie.

As the night came to an end, I decided, after flagging down a taxi for Diane and her boyfriend, that I wanted to continue the adventure before I had to return back to college the next day. I whipped out my phone and messaged Amy Poehler. Didn't you know we were close friends? I roll with the big timers. Nah, just kidding, I contacted Katie, the other half of Katie Squared. Now, if you read the other parts to my fashion week coverage, then you would know she is the Sottish doll that I take over the world with once in a while. Being that we see each other as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, it seemed fitting that our next trip would happen in the same place that brought those to fabulous women together...Rockefeller Plaza.

During her visit to New York,  Katie wanted to go to Top of The Rock, in which you take an elevator that seems like you are being ascended into heaven to the top of the Comcast Building. Except you don't get greeted by God when you get to the top. Instead, you are welcomed by lines, lines, and wait for it...lines! Don't worry cause once you are done you get to go to the top , but oh wait there is line to that elevator too. Seriously though, there may be many of them, but they aren't that long. The waiting time was pretty minimal. It all became worth it because once we go to the top, spectacular, is an understatement of how stunning it all truly was. As many times as I've gone to New York I have never done many touristy things and so this was my first time to witness this as well.

We both struggled trying to take "Instagram worthy" photos by wrapping our arms around the glass and risking our phone's lives. Then, when I looked up I noticed something that we both should have fifteen minutes prior. There is a second balcony above without glass, perfect for photos. Yup, we stood there looked up, turned to each other, and began to laugh because it was at that moment we noticed that although were on top we could still hit rock bottom from up there from how oblivious we were in that very moment. Quickly, we scrammed up the stairs and found a prime photo location. As we waiting for are all the couples to finish their canoodling snaps, us two single gals came in and used the Empire State building in the background as our date in the photo for the night. After all, New York is the love of both of our lives so why not. Plus, a few days there and Katie was ready to marry it and go on a temporary break from Scotland.

Thirty pictures, random bump-in's, and taking the wrong elevator later, Katie and I picked up our photo that the building had taken of us (Scroll Below), said goodbye to Rockefeller Center and as we walked to her subway entrance we met a guy who helped Katie with directions, but also got into a conservation about his experience in martial arts. Katie handled the odd conversation like all great Katie's do, with sarcasm. Then once he left into his subway stop, in the middle of Times Square it was time to say goodbye to her as well. For the next day she would leave to go back home to Scotland. It's okay though, because we both decided that I would visit one day and when I do I will with my face painted blue and scream "Freedom!" in the middle of the airport. Or maybe I shouldn't...might be too soon for that joke. Well, we have to reunite anyways to host the Golden Globes.

Too late to go home, my other friend staying in New York at the time, was awesome and super sweet enough to let me crash in her hotel room for the night. When I arrived, my blisters on the my feet were bloody, I was exhausted, and I had just had a major epiphany somewhere between Times Square and Park Avenue. Although, because of my class schedule, I wouldn't be able to attend all the shows for the week like I had hoped, this fashion week was the best one I have had so far. Was the fashion gorgeous and made by visionaries? Yes. However, this time it was people that made my trip all the more special and memory filled.  When I think of it, that's what fashion week is truly about, people. Sure there are clothes, but what is the clothing for? It is for people and what they will possibly wear in the future. What will they like? Who will wear it? Who can afford it?All these burning questions make up these stylishly themed months twice a year. Therefore, to know that I made my trip more about people and the enjoyment behind the garment then just the clothing wrapping the models, it made everything more real and less materialistic. Cause in a world filled with materialism, why not make it less about the objects and more about the people behind them? Only one of those survives trends and doesn't end up in a clearance bin.Your guess on which.

Style and the City: Recap of New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2015

My second day attending fashion week this September brought me a lot more fashion and a lot less humidity. Thank goodness because the previous day was bad...like Wicked Witch of the West melting bad. Except, I was wearing a pretty print dress and not all black and rather than turning into a puddle I was clever, well I'd like to think I was, and made my bathing suit into a top to absorb all my wonderful sweat. What? It worked and everyone thought I was wearing a pretty dress, when in reality it was a dress made into a skirt, my bathing suit, and a belt holding it all together. Take that Vogue!

That day I went to Cesar Galindo's show at the Hub in the Hudson Hotel. I'm not always fond of going to events at that venue because the temperature in that place is short of hellish. I'm pretty sure Satan  uses it as his home when visiting the city. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating, but in all honesty it is pretty bad. They have everyone crowded into the lobby waiting for about 30 minutes with a bug fan blowing. Yup, that fan does nothing, but I appreciate the attempt. Fortunately, all the shows I've seen there have all been worth the heat and long wait. Plus, I'm a pretty patient person who does not get phased easily so as uncomfortable as the warmth there is, I move along and pay attention to the fabulous showcases these hardworking people have put together. I feel worse for them. They're the ones who had to work there for several hours.

While at the Czar show, I bumped into another blogger buddy of mine, Simone of Fashion Runs the World. When we finished fawning over Galindo's stunning line, we walked towards Columbus Circle where we parted ways, she into the subway and I into the mall where I desperately looked for shoes to save my feet and food to devour. I had picked a lower heel that day so I wouldn't have to change shoes, but the sandal still ended up giving me blisters on the sides of my feet. Amazingly, out of that entire mall, I could not find shoes that were representative of the three C's...comforatble, chic, and cheap. Really...like really? Oh, well off the lunch I went. I ate at the Bouchon Bakery they had there and ordered myself a grease filled meal because although I am at NYFW, that does not mean I will resort to starving myself. I am good with my tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich thanks. Surprisingly, a lot of people eat well during fashion week so all those cliches that it's just a cube of cheese and a leaf of lettuce you can go away and find yourself a salad to be tossed in. When I sat down, I was at a table next to these two older gentlemen who I presume just came from the same show as me and were discussing some of the most  fascinating topics that I had heard all week. There were no sentences involving how much tule the dress had or if you captured the perfect picture for Instagram of the show, they were chatting about things like sex symbolism in fashion and what it all means or how creativity has changed in the industry. I did not mean to be nosy, but I was literally sitting right next to them so I could overhear everything they were discussing and it was riveting. Honestly, they should have their own show at a local theater. I hadn't heard that much intelligence in a fashion based conversation in a while. I mean it's not like these series on television offer much aside from insults about Red Carpet fashion. Saying someone looks like a mermaid prostitute in a gown is yes funny, but not real fashion logic, especially coming from those whose fashion sense is skeptical to begin with in the first place. Anyways, this conversation enthralled so much of my attention that I ended up flicking my soup filled spoon and splattering my hair and chest with tomato. The two of the men got up at that moment and left after complimenting my choice in food. At least they didn't see me wiping off the red hue from my hair five seconds earlier.

From the mall, I took a taxi to Chelsea Market and stopped by Glamour Magazine's pop-up shop event for street style. There, I met up with Diane again. It was quite a nice set-up with section's for hair, make-up, skin care, and much more. It was spacious and decorated as if you were out on a patio reminiscent of the cafe on the roof of the Met. However, my favorite part were the free copies of Glamour Magazine. IT'S A FREE MAGAZINE! DO YOU KNOW HOW EXPENSIVE THEY ARE NOWADAYS! Who needs fancy chocolates in a gift bag? Give me a magazine or a tub of Nutella and I will vote for you in whatever election you are running for anyday.

When we finished, we began our trek from Chelsea Market to the Carlton Hotel in midtown for the Fashion First Aid event. I must state at this point in the story that when we arrived, the hotel was like an episode out of Downton Abbey. That was until we needed to think of where to charge our phones. Darn technological reality! Kim, the brilliant mind behind Fashion First Aid, came downstairs and escorted us to her showcase. It included all the new and current items of the brand. For those who don't know Fashion First Aid...shame on you, but really though you need to check them out. They have every fashion solution you can think of from a portable mini sewing machine to "Subtle Butt," a gas neutralizer for your bum.  I'm not kidding that exists and you know you want one.  There, we were given some yummy champagne, chatted about the sores on our feet, and simply laughed over all the hilariously clever products she was presenting. I'm waiting for that bear for my boobs. Okay, that may sound weird, but you had to have been there!

Style and the City: Recap of New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2015

My skirt flew up and and two paparazzi came by and snatched some photos. Yes darlings that's how my fashion week started this September. Five minutes in and I was already having a Marilyn Monroe moment. Of course, mine was more like Kristen Wiig than Monroe, being that I handled it with absolute hilarity and grace at same time. Luckily, for me New York and page six didn't get a look at any of my undergarments, but rather some epic and awkwardly hilarious facial expressions in true Katie style.

Skirts flying and the paps buzzing aside, this fashion week was especially important for me because the first night there, I got to share it with a close friend from the summer camp I worked at this past year. She's my Scottish lassie, facial expression partner, photo booth co-star, and possibly the perfect match as the Amy Poehler to my Tina Fey. It is true, we should be hired by Saturday Night Live, but that is a story for another time. Point is, when Katie (yes her name is Katie and we call ourselves Katie Squared cause we are dorks whatevs) and I are together, it doesn't matter if there is a torrential downpour of rain (that time walking to Walmart with your luggage Katie) or if Chris Pine were to come up to me and ask me out, she and I ignore whatever is going on and simply know how to have a good ole fashion time!Of course, we would probably share Chris since he has enough blue eyes to fill an ocean. Her Scottish humor mixed with my sarcasm and our perfectly timed jokes, I'm surprised Fashion Week came out unscathed. Then again, the week of style, selfies, and non-stop work can use some funniness once in awhile. I mean free drinks, parties, shows, and all the fashion are a good time and all, but let's change it up a  little and not make it seem like the only way to enjoy an event at fashion week is if your sipping a flute of champagne with a pinky up and a stick up your bum.

Fashion is suppose to be this elaborate art that is beautiful and exciting and fashion week should convey that. Instead, this time, it was filled with people who don't even work for the industry walking around and acting like they own the place and quite frankly taking up space from those who actually need to cover the event. Okay okay I will stop and not rant on, but in all honesty what happened to when fashion was fun? Don't get me wrong I love fashion week and attending is an honor. To see the pieces designers have worked on so tediously is truly a gift.That's why I make my fashion weeks as enjoyable as possible. I meet up with people I have worked with before, old friends, network with new ones,host dinner dates at Bryant Park, and when I go to a show I sit, watch, relax, and truly breath-in everything the designer is offering. After all, it is like going to a museum. You walk around find a painting you really love, plant yourself in front of it and just stare trying to find every side of beauty that it represents. That's how I feel when I see a gown come down the runway that just changes my life and reminds me why I love this industry.  

Anyways, back to my adventure with Katie. We attended the Academy of Art show together and watching her thrill over being at Lincoln Center, I think, was the best part of the whole night.Once we got inside it was like the beginning of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when Willy Wonka first takes the kids into his factory. Her eyes grew and so did her smile and it was like the Grinch had stolen Christmas except she isn't green and creepy. Walking around and showing her everything from the empty E News set to taking what I call phenomenal photos at the Pandora Lounge photo booth, made it good time. Eventually, I bumped into my blogger bestie Diane Taha of Style Context who has been in ways my NYFW partner for three seasons now.

After the show, I went with Katie to Starbucks and pulled a Superman and changed my outfit and shoes in the bathroom. My feet weren't exactly feeling those heels anymore. Seriously though, they had no feeling in them. Once having dropped of Katie at the subway to catch her ride back to her hostel, I walked my way towards down-town with the lights of Lincoln Center fading in the background. It was truly a beautiful night. Columbus Circle was stunning as always, jazz players were playing on the sidewalk, my skirt was finally flowing correctly, and oh wait is that a man seizing on the ground in front of Duane Reid? Oh and he is foaming at the mouth. Okay, yup that was happening. As a crowd built I went inside to alert the store and they all gave me blank looks and told me to tell there manager who told me to tell their adviser who told me to tell...you know what forget it. How about just coming outside and helping? Fortunately, we called an ambulance and they came within seconds to help the guy out. I wish I could tell you if the guy ended up okay, but alas when the ambulance came and they took over, the crowd dispersed and now his status is a mystery to me. 

Following the craziness that was that scene, I continued on my path, met up with my sister at a restaurant in Manhattan where she was dining with friends. I only stayed a few minutes being that if you stay in that place too long, even if you had just eaten a water buffalo or were a practicing vegetarian, you will somehow end up ordering highly expensive steak that is totally worth its price. 

Escaping the fumes of yumminess  my next stop was downtown to visit my other friend from camp who was also leaving Monday. The time I spent with her at her humble...extremely extravagant hotel like cheese Louis it was nice, was literally the most uneventful yet calming time of the day. All we did was watch Forrest Gump,  recite its lines while it was playing, and jump behind the bed when a huge strike of lightning struck down onto the east river. Yes it was like lightning seen in a movie. I'm pretty sure Michael Bay was directing it just so it would be bigger, louder, and somehow seem awesome to adolescent boys. Luckily, I did not have to pay $13.50 to see it. If only I could say the same for the third Transformers film. It was safe to say, it was an interesting night filled with an array of events.

To China with Love: Costume Institute Announces Chinese Inspired Spring 2015 Exhibit

It was announced on September 12th that this Spring's Costume Institute exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum will focus on Chinese Imagery in all realms from art, and film, to especially fashion. Called Chinese Whispers: Tales of the East in Art, Film, and Fashion,  the exhibit will be open to the public on May 7th, 2015, a few days after it is viewed by the guests and press at the Met Ball on May 4th. It will continue to be open until August 16th of that same year. The presentation will be on display in both the Museum's Chinese Galleries as well as the Anna Wintour Costume Center. 

As for the reasoning behind this year's theme, well it's simple. Being that China has been the mind behind some of the biggest creative accomplishments in many mediums, it felt only right for the board to honor them in this special way. Now, thanks to Yahoo and Conde Nast for their support, this exhibit is sure to be a stunning spectacle of beauty, intellect, and cultural understanding. 

"I am excited about this partnership between these two forward-thinking departments that will undoubtedly reveal provocative new insights into the West’s fascination with Chinese aesthetics,” said Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of the Met.  “The artistic direction of acclaimed filmmaker Wong Kar Wai will take visitors on a cinematic journey through our galleries, where high fashion will be shown alongside masterworks of Chinese art.”

This will be the first exhibit since AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion in 2006, to participate in a collaboration between two curatorial departments. This one however, will feature everything from 100 examples of haute couture, and avant-garde ready-to-wear, to some Chinese art pieces as well. For instance, it is planned that the second floor (Chinese Galleries) will display  fashion from the 1700s to the present, with pops of decorative arts from Imperial China, including jade, lacquer, cloisonné, and blue-and-white porcelain. There will even be an area of Astor Court dedicated to Chinese Opera. This makes much sense since performer Mei Lanfang, inspired  John Galliano's spring 2003 Christian Dior Haute Couture Line.

For the Met Ball (May 4th) celebrating the opening of this exhibit, Silas Chou will serve as Honorary Chair.  The evening’s co-chairs will be Jennifer Lawrence, Gong Li, Marissa Mayer, Wendi Murdoch, and Anna Wintour.

Fantasy Land: How Wearing a Dress by eShakti is Like Living in a Fairy-Tale

Once upon a time, there was a fashion blogger who was asked to write a review of an online fashion brand called eShakti. She was fabulous and anything she wore would look great on her. Therefore, this review would go easily. Yeah, just kidding. I wouldn't say I'm fabulous, unless I'm dancing the sprinkler in the middle of a dance floor, and not everything I wear or attempt to always comes out perfect. Which, by the way, I'm fine with because I dress for myself. However, my collaboration with eShakti did go extremely well. 

eShakti, is a website, in which you can order really well-made clothes that are guaranteed to fit women of all shapes an sizes. Basically, they tailor the pieces you order. So instead of having to go to a personal seamstress or tailor and pay extra there, they do it for you without all the fuss. Which is quite brilliant. 

When I had to order my item to review, I chose their orange horse-shoe print dress. I was a bit curious about whether or not it would be a tad sheer. Lately, almost all dresses sold online or in-stores seem to be sheer. It's like brands have forgotten what lining is or how to use it. Thankfully, this was not the case for their product. It had a thick lining of fabric underneath the actual print one which made the dress heavier and more expensive looking. Granted, this dress is retailed for more than a hundred dollars, but if you need a dress that will be tailored to fit and will last many years for various occasions, than the investment is worth it...and that's coming from a girl who buys expensive frocks on clearance for like twenty bucks. I must say though, I did receive this piece for free in return for an honest opinion of their brand. So instead of getting paid, I got a dress. Not too shabby right? 

With that said, if I would have hated it, I would definitely say something. Thing is, I exceedingly adore this dress. It's vintage aesthetic, bright hue, and excellent stitching, make it well-worth the buy. The only minor detail I wasn't too fond of was the fact that in the mid-section, the fabric kept folding instead of laying smoothly against my body. This lead me to constantly having to readjust myself, which if you are out, may become frustrating. Aside from this, I was quite impressed with what I got and it made me feel like a princess. I know that sounds like a cliche, but I can twirl in it like it is my job and that is awesome. Plus, we took the photos for this post in a private garden/park  which reminded me of Sleeping Beauty and wallah my inner Disney princess shined bright and not just because it was a cloudy day, so I was the only bright thing around. 

It is also important to mention that it was about 40 degrees and windy that day, which meant it was freezing. So much so, that a week later I got bronchitis from this photo-shoot. That wasn't exactly fairy-tale like, but sacrifices are sometimes made for a great dress, and eShakti has just exactly that and more. 

Lesson here, just wear a sweater during the Wizard of Oz-like gusts of wind.
